5 Common Myths About Root Canal Treatment

Aug 29, 2018

When tooth decay reaches a certain point, a cavity may simply grow too large and cannot be fixed with a simple dental filling. Sometimes, a root canal is necessary in order to save the tooth and restore its functionality. However, many people struggle with such an intense fear of root canals that they neglect to go to the dentist for up to many years. This can lead to much more pain than is necessary and can even result in the loss of a tooth.

The fact of the matter is, root canals are really not as scary as they are made out to be. In fact, they are designed to relieve pain, not increase it.

In this article, we would like to discuss some of the common myths surrounding root canal treatment.

  • Root canal treatment is painful

Although you will be experiencing pain during, before, and after the treatment, it is not because of the root canal procedure. The pain is associated with a severe infection that is affecting your nerves in your teeth. The root canal treatment is what will eventually solve that pain after a period of healing.

  • Root canal procedures require several visits

Most people believe that a tooth extraction is better than a root canal because it is quicker. In fact, that is not true. If you opt for an extraction, a dental implant will also be necessary. A root canal typically requires 1 to 3 visits, but that is determined on the condition of your tooth.

  • A root canal kills the tooth

A root canal does not kill a tooth; it kills the infection that is damaging the tooth. A root canal will allow the tooth to heal and can save it.

  • Root canal procedures are not typically successful

In fact, root canals have about a 95% success rate, which is very high. As long as you do your part in maintaining your oral care routine, your tooth should live with you for the rest of your life.
