Everything You Need to Know About Dental Fillings

Aug 29, 2018

Dental fillings are one of the most common reasons for patients today to enter their local dental office. Personally, I often times went into my dentist office to receive a dental filling, but never really fully understood what this treatment implied. In this article we will discuss exactly that, so that our patients don’t have to wonder about what a dental filling is.

What are Dental Fillings?

To begin, a dental filling is a piece of malleable material that’s placed into the site of a cavity that developed in the tooth. The goal of this filing is to restore the tooth function and to stop the growth of the cavity. This material is placed inside the tooth and hardened so that the tooth can finally function again properly.

When are Dental Fillings Needed?

Dental fillings are needed when a hole forms in the exterior of the tooth. This whole can form from decay or trauma, but if it remains untreated the hole will get worse and allow bacteria in to the interior of the tooth. If you regularly experience sensitivity to hot or cold, or if you can visibly see a dark spot or hole in the tooth contact your dentist immediately.

Different Types of Fillings

Dental fillings come in different types as they can be manufactured from a variety of different materials. Your dentist will help you come to the best conclusion as to which material to use based on your needs, desires, and circumstances. The most common feelings are made from a safe composite resin material made to match the color of the surrounding teeth. Films can also be made from gold or silver, but these can be more expensive.
